Mardaani 2 (Movie Review)

Suhail Umrani
Mardani 2 released in December 2019 is a sequel of part one (Mardani Franchise) released in 2014 that was another trademark in Indian cinema. Since its first part the cop Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukharjee) seems very curious against all criminals. And, in this installment she is charged up against a psycho killer and rapist. This is all about cat and mouse game between Shivani Shivaji Roy played by Rani Mukharjee and Sunny played by Vishal Jethwa.

In every film the director plays a vital role by passive decisions of selection of story, actors and other technical stuff so; the captain of this ship Gopi Puthran has done really wonderful job. He is not only the director of the movie but has inked the story as well and he reveals it finely. He establishes the pace of the film in very first shot filmed in a holy fair (Dussehra).

Cinema lovers are well familiar with Rani’s outstanding performances and since Raja Ki Aaygi Baarat she has been doing all characters tremendously. Once again, she holds all on her shoulders and balances between her and Sunny with sharp and crisp moments.

The first side of coin is Rani and contrary the second side goes along with film’s antagonist (Sunny) who challenges the top cop (Rani). Vishal Jethwa, a debutant let you hate him as well as love his performance and brutal innocence before a power house like Rani Muharjee.

I went through some research and watched his interviews and gathered information about his hard work and determination behind bringing Sunny in front of the lance of the camera, he learnt sign language for the role, he studied on psycho patients, he also learnt Rajhastani accent for this character and believe me he reminded me of Asutash Rana in bald look which is very scary in the film and may be his best one in this story.

The pace of the film is very engaging in both parts either first half or second one and more importantly with no songs in this one hour and forty three minutes saga, has proven it right decision and really appealing as per the requirements of the story whereas; background score is brilliantly applied.

Mardaani 2 is a drama which also attempts to fight against patriarchy and in it Rani Mukharji leads the show with one of the best performances of her life. Vishal Jethwa is excellent gift and finding for Bollywood industry and no doubt he is going to be a star soon. Watch the film along with your family and friends not only for the entertainment but for a powerful and social message as well.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 for its screenplay, 4 out of 5 for the direction, 5 out of 5 for acting (Rani and Vishal), must watch film.
